Wound Care Specialist Certification (WCS-C)

The Wound Care Specialist Certification (WCS-C) program is designed to meet the basic wound care educational needs of the medical providers working in different clinical settings. This course provides a comprehensive review about the Evaluation & Management of the Acute & Chronic Wounds and the diagnosis and documentation requirements per CMS criteria. In addition; skills competency session provides each attendee with the hands-on experience needed to function as a Wound Care Specialist. Course participation will increase the knowledge, skills, ability, and confidence of the attendees leading to effective wound management and optimal patient outcomes.

Course Objectives
  • Anatomy & Physiology of the skin.
  • Phases of wound healing.
  • Basic fundamentals of wound care.
  • Classification & Diagnosis of wounds based on CMS/ICD-10 criteria: Diagnosis & Treatment Standards.
  • Wound Debridement: Types, properties and uses of wound debridement.
  • Wound Care Dressings: Properties & Uses.
  • Wound Care evaluation & management guidelines utilizing Standard of Care Continuum.
  • Role of PA and APRNs: Prescriptive authority and the Wound Care Specialist role.
  • Wound Care Specialist Consultation rules and Scope of practice.
  • Wound Care Pharmacology.
  • Legal liabilities: Wound care Specialty.
  • Skills Lab: Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Dressing, Wound culture technique, Compression therapy, Aseptic dressing change technique, Circulation assessment utilizing Doppler and wound measurement technique.
Scope of Practice
  • Medical provider: A doctor of medicine or osteopathy (MD/DO) who is authorized to practice medicine or surgery by the State in which the doctor practices. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Podiatrist (DPM) and Physician assistants (PA) who are authorized to practice under the State law and who are performing within the scope of their practice as defined under State law.
  • Wound care is a clinical specialty that requires substantial specialized judgment and proficiency, focused on compassionate, clinically appropriate, and patient centered care effective for the wound treatment and for the promotion of overall health.
  • All medical providers shall practice with a focus on patient safety, and function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting.
